NAME
beta —
invitations, limits and caveats
DESCRIPTION
chroot.dev is a beta, by invitation: a 14-day trial, then plans from US$ 5 a month.
If you want a long-lived OpenBSD server, https://openbsd.amsterdam already does that well. chroot.dev is for VMs you create, change and destroy from a script or a terminal.
INVITATION
Invitations go out by hand, in small batches. Ask at invite@chroot.dev; you get a one-time code. Signing up, and the host key to check before the first connection: account(7).
LIMITS
Per account, by plan, stopped VMs included; the trial has 1 VM, 1
cpu, 512 MiB of memory, 5 GiB of disk and 10 GiB of traffic a month in and
out. Network 20 Mbit/s each way per VM; past the account's monthly traffic,
1 Mbit/s until the month ends (UTC), or billed per GiB with a subscription.
Inbound traffic counts as well, including what reaches the public address
unasked. billing shows the plan and the month's
traffic.
PRICE
Plans from US$ 5 (R$ 25) a month; see billing(1). What it costs to run and what it earns is in costs(7).

CAVEATS
- host
- One dedicated server at OVHcloud in Beauharnois, Canada. A single machine: when it goes down, every VM goes down with it.
- speed
- From
newto a working ssh takes 0.7 to 0.9 s measured on the host. From your network, add the round trips to Beauharnois; expect higher latency from South America, Europe and Asia. - data
- Disks survive stop, start and host reboots. There are no backups yet: keep a copy of anything you care about.
- end of beta
- You are notified at the address you gave before VMs are removed.
- abuse
- Report to abuse@chroot.dev; what is not allowed is in terms(7).
