costs — what chroot.dev costs and what it earns

chroot.dev is a free beta, by invitation. It earns nothing: no paid plans, no donations, no ads. One person pays for it.

Amounts are in US dollars. Reais are converted at the Banco Central PTAX rate of the month; yearly bills count a twelfth each month.

Akamai VPS in Sao Paulo. Holds the public IP, forwards ssh and https to the host; VM traffic leaves through it.
host energy
The host is a notebook already owned: a ThinkPad with a Ryzen 7 PRO 4750U and 16 GiB, so no hardware cost. Measured on battery with the VMs running: 6.9 W, about 8 W at the wall, 5.76 kWh a month, priced at the month's power bill.
home internet
The host's uplink, counted in full.
domains
Yearly at Cloudflare Registrar.
backups
Off-site copies at rsync.net, billed yearly. The account also holds personal backups; counted in full.
card tax (IOF)
The 3.5% Brazilian tax on card payments abroad, over the items billed in dollars.

Each amount comes from a bill or a measurement. Bills carry personal data and are not published; the SHA-256 of each file is, so a copy shown later can be checked against it.
